India ranks at 10th place in Climate Change Performance Index 2021
India ranked at 10th position in the global Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2021 released in Germany recently. This is the second year in a row that India has remained in top 10 position in the list of countries to have adopted substantial measures to mitigate climate change. The biggest current emitter of greenhouse gases (GHG) China figures at 33rd rank while the largest historical polluter, the USA, appears at the bottom of the list.
Last year, India held ninth position in the global ranking with an overall score of 66.02. Though India slid one position down this year, the country’s journey towards climate protection has been consistent with it improving its ranking from 31st in 2014.
Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI)
The annual Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), published since 2005, is an independent monitoring tool for tracking the climate protection performance of 57 countries and the EU, which collectively account for over 90% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The Climate Change Performance Index is developed by not-for-profit organisations German watch and New Climate Institute (Germany) together with the Climate Action Network (CAN International).
The CCPI aims to enhance transparency in international climate politics and it enables comparison of individual countries’ climate protection efforts and progress.
The CCPI assesses countries’ performance in four categories:
- “GHG Emissions” (40% of overall score),
- “Renewable Energy” (20% of overall score),
- “Energy Use” (20% of overall score) and
- “Climate Policy” (20% of overall score).
Climate Change Performance Index 2021
The report has left the first three positions of the ranking ‘blank’, as none of the countries have been found compatible with the goals led under the Paris Agreement. Among the other rank holders, the fourth place belongs to Sweden (74.42), followed by the United Kingdom (69.66), Denmark (69.42), Morocco (67.59), Norway (65.45) and Chile (64.05)
Only two G20 nations- the UK and India – are among the high rankers in CCPI 2021, which covers the year 2020. While the US is ranked 61st at the bottom, Saudi Arabia is ranked 60th, Iran 59th, Canada 58th, Australia 54th and Russia 52nd.
